Luxor Las Vegas
Situated between Mandalay Bay to the south and Excalibur to the north, the 30-story Luxor Las Vegas Hotel and Casino sits along the Las Vegas Strip. The three structures are linked by local trams and a free express. Opened in 1993 with just its iconic pyramid, which was the tallest structure on the Las Vegas Strip, in 1998, two additional hotels with 2,000 rooms and a theater were added to the complex to complete its design as a replication of a pyramid between a pair of ziggurat towers. One of the first fully themed mega resorts in Las Vegas, the iconic Ancient Egyptian complex was named after the Egyptian city of Luxor, known for the Karnak and Luxor Temples, the Valley of Kings and other monuments. Topping the pyramid is the 42.3-billion candela Luxor Sky Bean, the strongest beam of light in the world, which uses computer designed, curved mirrors to collect the light from 39 xenon lamps and focus them into one intense, narrow beam that is visible up to 275 miles away by aircraft at cruising altitude. The complex has other distinguishing themed elements, including the Obelisk and the Great Sphinx of Giza by the hotel entrance.
